Award Winning Open Concept Floor Plan Kitchen

2015 NARI Contractor of the Year Award Winner

Residential Kitchen $80,000 – $120,000

This luxury packed Scottsdale kitchen renovation with its open concept floor plan is a combination of beautiful traditional and transitional styles. Our customer requested that we remodel her kitchen in such a way that it was aesthetically pleasing to her, but still accommodated her mom and sister when she used her wheelchair. Our homeowner’s kitchen had already begun to exhibit restrictions caused by multiple cooks in the kitchen at the same time. In order to design a convenient new space, our nationally certified Kitchen & Bath Designer worked closely with both daughter and mother to design the new kitchen so that every element was universally accessible for all three members of the household. In a few short months, we would transform her home to a place where the whole family gathers in its open concept floor plan kitchen.

Aims of this Scottsdale kitchen renovation include:

  • Alleviating congestion in the center of the kitchen by creating an open concept floor plan
  • Making storage and appliances accessible to a family member in a wheelchair
  • Making provisions for cooking, baking and storage facilities to aid in preparing and serving food for larger family groups
  • Designing a bar at the island suitable for entertaining guests
  • Creating an astonishing backsplash over the cooktop that becomes the focal point of the kitchen
  • Planning to display the family’s decorative items.

To create an open concept floor plan, we just needed to define and reorganize it, because we had lots of room. To begin this remodel, we put a Sub-zero refrigerator-freezer combination at the outer corner of the kitchen, providing easy movement and accessibility within the previously-congested center area. Next, we relocated the double stack oven to the opposite corner of the large kitchen to create a balance across the room. To help with food preparation and service, we placed base cabinets at the cooktop and beverage center to house a new warming drawer and microwave drawer. This placement made these appliances within the reach of a person in a wheelchair, allowing us to accomplish one of our renovation goals.

To maximize the storage space within this Scottsdale kitchen, we increased the depth of all the upper cabinets from 12 inches to 15 inches. Additionally, we situated taller cabinets on the rear of the island to that served to improve storage and provide support for the bar. These pieces were upgraded with fluted columns, pyramid-shaped caps, scroll corbels, and cove crown molding were used for the finishing touches. All the beauty and splendor you would expect from these pieces were all visible on these cherry cabinets.

Ultimately, the focal point of this Scottsdale kitchen turned out to be the Mardi Gras Quartzite backsplash. The homeowner and her mom had chosen this astonishing natural stone material for their countertops. The original backsplash material paled by comparison, so we located another slab of the stone and our expert fabricator created their magnificent backsplash. The Kohler Whitehaven Cashmere sink looked amazing next to the quartzite countertop. To complete the renovation, we hung antique mirrored pendants over the island.

The end result of the hard work is a beautiful and functional open concept kitchen that perfectly suits this large family. By paying attention to detail, we accomplished all of the design goals and created a new kitchen that the family loves.
