What’s New In Tile for 2024

A HOUZZ Article by Julie Sheer, Contributor

Tile Trends for 2024

Color has been tiptoeing back to the tile scene for the last few years and now seems to be reaching a crescendo, with bold and saturated hues in a variety of shapes and sizes. [Tile Trends for 2024] These were highlighted in the new tile collections on display at The International Surface Event 2024 trade show, held recently in Las Vegas. For the less adventurous, the displays also held plenty of more subtle offerings in warm neutrals, grays, and blacks, in ever-evolving shapes and patterns.

Many of the displays were dominated by natural and engineered stone looks, especially marble, which continues to make a big statement in tile and slabs. The imperfect, glossy, handcrafted zellige-style look is still going strong, but perhaps with a bit less bling than in the last few years. “We’ve seen a move to more color and using color as a design element, but in addition to that we’re seeing a lot of interest in mixed materials,” Kathy Greene of Emser Tile says.

Here are highlights from the Jan. 23-26 trade show for the tile, stone, and floor coverings industries. The [tile trends for 2024] collections will be rolling out throughout the year, with some products becoming available later in 2024.

1. Color, Color and More Color

Saturated color in primary hues made for some vibrant displays at this year’s Surfaces show. Blues and greens continue to dominate tile design, with taupes, creams, mustards, and terra cotta completing the palettes of many of the displays.

Emser Tile’s Skite collection is shown here in Ember. There will be six colors in the new collection. “It’s a kite-shaped tile in some fun primary colors,” Greene says. “You can do all kinds of different patterns and designs with it. You can go bold or subtle. All the colors are meant to blend nicely with each other, so you can go all solid or you can mix and match, so it’s a lot of fun.”

The color palette is subdued but trippy in Emser’s new Spectra collection of wall tile in glazed ceramic that looks like grasscloth. “It has a texture to it and has a slight sheen, but what’s really cool is its gradient feature,” Greene says. The wall tile comes in just one size, 20 by 48 inches, which Greene says is large for a wall tile but easier to install because less grout is required.

2. Black and White Tile Trends in 2024

An absence of color doesn’t make the tile any less interesting or creative, as evidenced in the eye-catching black-and-white patterns and layouts on display at the Surfaces show. Many were paired with grays and other neutrals.

Emser Tile’s new Skite collection has bold colors along with neutrals, white, black, and gray. The backsplash seen here consists of Carbon, white, and gray Skite tiles laid in a geometric pattern.

3. Fun New Shapes

Tile designers continue to innovate with striking new shapes and patterns that add movement and interest. Geometric shapes get a refresh this season, with fewer Moroccan and encaustic patterns.

Emser Tile’s new Contra collection includes slanted shapes on glossy and matte tiles. Seen here in the Navy, the Slant design will be available in 10 colors, including solids and combinations of matte and glossy finishes in single tiles.

Greene says the company is focusing on collections like Contra that let designers and homeowners play with shapes, colors, and sizes within and between collections. “You can have a lot of fun with these kinds of products, mixing and matching and changing the look,” she says. “Contra is meant to have an artisan look to it, so it’s not a straight line and looks like a handmade tile.”

MSI’s new Miraggio quartz for countertops and walls imitates Calacatta marble. The samples seen here were inspired by trending Pantone colors, which are the colored swatches on the slabs. “Our designer team works closely with these trends and we build everything off of that,” MSI’s Fallon Crawford says. There’s a little reddish tone in the Sienna slab on the left, which Crawford says “is meant to bring in those warm tones that are becoming more and more popular.”
Anne Colby
MSI’s Crawford says Miraggio quartz is best used on counters and walls. “We’re also seeing a lot of it used as full-height backsplashes, shower surrounds and just as accents,” she says. This photo shows Miraggio’s Calacatta Gold on a kitchen counter and backsplash.

5. Skinny Minis

Slim rectangular tiles are part of many tile collections these days, perhaps a response to the current trend of fluted and reeded surfaces. They tend to come in mosaic sheets for easy installation of a modern, of-the-moment wall or backsplash.

Daltile’s new wood-look Acreage collection of porcelain tiles includes 1-by-24-inch mesh-mounted mosaics for walls, shown here in Palomino. The collection comes in four wood tones and also includes 8-by-48-inch floor planks.
