The Mid-Century Heart of Tempe
Mid-Century Modern Homes in Tempe
Tempe is more than a college town—it’s one of the Valley’s hidden gems for mid-century modern architecture. Nestled among mature trees, established neighborhoods, and ASU’s thriving energy, Tempe’s mid-century homes offer a perfect blend of style, location, and character. From charming ranches in Broadmor and Cavalier Hills to unique MCM gems in Hudson Manor and Rural-Geneva, these properties continue to attract design-conscious homeowners who appreciate their historical roots and architectural charm.

Whether you’re ready to expand your kitchen, remove a wall, or completely reimagine your interior flow, our award-winning design-build team brings the experience and sensitivity that mid-century homes deserve.
Defining Features of Tempe’s Mid-Century Modern Homes
Many homes built in Tempe during the 1950s to 1970s reflect the popular modernist principles of the time: form follows function, simplicity reigns, and nature is brought indoors through glass, light, and open layouts.
Common architectural features include:
- Gabled or low-pitched rooflines
- Exposed wood beams and vaulted ceilings
- Clerestory and floor-to-ceiling windows
- Breezeblock walls and carports
- Efficient floor plans and large yards
- Natural materials like brick and block
These homes were built for a different era—but their bones are solid, and their potential is enormous. Our remodeling process helps Tempe homeowners modernize everything from plumbing and insulation to kitchens and additions—while staying true to the home’s soul.
Tempe’s Top Mid-Century Neighborhoods
We’ve worked in many of Tempe’s most beloved MCM neighborhoods, including:
- Broadmor
One of Tempe’s most iconic neighborhoods, Broadmor features custom-built homes from the late ’50s and early ’60s with block construction, exposed beams, and clerestory windows. It’s perfect for clients looking to retain period details while introducing comfort and open space. - Rural-Geneva / Daley Park Area
Just east of ASU, this eclectic neighborhood includes mid-century homes with large lots, original materials, and a strong sense of community. Homeowners here often seek functional upgrades that preserve architectural charm. - Cavalier Hills
Homes here are modest in size but rich in character. Open floor plans, low-slung roofs, and carports offer prime opportunities for kitchen expansions, open concepts, and energy-efficient improvements. - Hudson Manor
This pocket neighborhood near Tempe Town Lake features solidly built mid-century homes, many with vaulted ceilings, brick detailing, and potential for garage conversions, casita additions, or modernized bathrooms. - Tempe Gardens
Built in the 1960s and 70s, this community has strong bones and spacious lots. Homes here are great candidates for whole-home remodeling, casita additions, or contemporary reinterpretations of classic MCM features.

Featured Project: Mid-Century Kitchen in Tempe
We recently remodeled a mid-century kitchen near Daley Park, where our client wanted to bring natural light, better storage, and flow to their home. The original kitchen was boxed in and dated—but full of potential. We removed a load-bearing wall to open the space, added a peninsula with seating, and introduced custom slab cabinetry in a walnut finish.
Modern appliances were seamlessly integrated, and white quartz countertops kept the space light and airy. The original tongue-and-groove ceiling was preserved, tying the past and present together. This kitchen now serves as the heart of the home—proof that mid-century modernization can be both respectful and radical.
