HOW OUR DESIGN/BUILD SYSTEM WORKS
At Homework Remodels, we specialize in home design, remodeling, and construction throughout the greater Phoenix area. Our Design-Build system brings together both the creative and construction aspects of home renovation into one cohesive, streamlined process. This integrated approach not only promotes better communication and greater accountability, but also helps eliminate delays, reduces unnecessary costs, and ensures your vision is brought to life with clarity, precision, and care.
Our team is dedicated to guiding you through every stage of your home transformation journey. From the first phone call to the final walk-through, we handle all the intricate details so you can enjoy the process. Our proven Design-Build system provides both structure and flexibility, creating a seamless experience that is personalized to reflect your unique lifestyle, goals, and aesthetic preferences.
Step 1: Getting to Know You
Every successful project begins with a deep understanding of your needs and lifestyle. We start by learning about your goals, daily routines, aesthetic preferences, and the functionality you desire in your living spaces. This initial discovery phase is essential to creating a design that feels uniquely yours.
We value your ideas and take them seriously. Our design team listens attentively to your input, asking insightful questions to uncover both practical requirements and stylistic aspirations. Whether you envision a gourmet kitchen for entertaining, a serene master bath retreat, or a spacious home addition to accommodate your growing family, we tailor the design to fit your vision and your life.
You’ll be supported every step of the way by your dedicated designer. From selecting materials and finishes to exploring layout options, we collaborate closely to ensure every detail aligns with your expectations. Our thoughtful and attentive approach ensures that your voice is heard throughout the process.
Step 2: Initial Consultation
Our process begins with a short, informative phone call to learn more about your home, goals, and any specific challenges or ideas you may have. This call also provides an opportunity for you to ask questions about our experience, process, and past projects.
If the conversation indicates a good fit between your needs and our services, we’ll schedule a no-obligation in-home consultation. During this visit, we:
- Tour your existing space and evaluate its layout and potential
- Define the initial scope of work based on your needs
- Learn more about how you use your space and what improvements matter most
- Answer your questions regarding design, budgeting, and construction
- Share budget ranges based on similar, completed projects for your consideration
This consultation helps both you and our team determine if we’re aligned in terms of personality, design approach, and project budget. If we all feel confident in moving forward, we begin the Design and Pre-Construction Phase.
Step 3: Collaborative Design Phase
The design phase is where your vision truly begins to take shape. Working collaboratively, we refine layout options and begin selecting finishes, fixtures, and features that suit your needs and taste. Every detail is considered and curated with purpose and precision.
Together, we explore and choose from:
- Functional and aesthetic floor plan options
- Custom cabinetry styles, finishes, and configurations
- Countertop materials and slab selections with hands-on viewing opportunities
- Tile options including backsplashes, floor, and shower accents
- Plumbing fixtures in various finishes and placements
- Lighting fixtures and their specific placements throughout your home
- Wall colors, trim selections, and surface treatments
To help you visualize the outcome, we provide either hand-drawn renderings or sophisticated computer-generated 3D views of your updated space. This allows you to preview the design and feel confident about your decisions before construction begins.
As we work through the design, we regularly review budgets. We ensure each design choice aligns with your priorities and investment level. By the end of this phase, all materials, selections, and details are finalized, and your scope of work is clearly defined with a fixed budget in place.
Step 4: Build Phase & Project Execution
With the finalized plan in hand, the build phase begins. All selections, drawings, and agreed-upon budgets are incorporated into your Construction Agreement. This set of documents guides every step of the construction process and ensures that everyone is aligned on expectations.
Your dedicated Project Manager steps in to oversee the build. They handle the daily coordination of trades, monitor the schedule, and manage on-site quality control. Serving as your primary point of contact, the Project Manager ensures transparency, keeps you updated, and answers your questions throughout the construction timeline.
Meanwhile, your designer remains involved throughout the build. They consult with the Project Manager to clarify design elements and make on-the-fly adjustments if necessary. This collaborative partnership between design and construction ensures that your original vision is never lost in execution.
We understand that construction within a lived-in home can be disruptive. That’s why our team maintains a clean, respectful work environment and works efficiently to minimize inconvenience. If any unforeseen challenges arise during construction, we address them promptly and provide clear, thoughtful solutions that respect your goals and budget.
Why Design-Build Works
The Design-Build model is a powerful alternative to the traditional design-bid-build method. It brings all project phases—design, planning, and construction—under one roof. This means fewer handoffs, better communication, and one accountable team working together with a shared vision.
By eliminating the disconnect between designers and builders, the Design-Build process results in smoother transitions between phases, faster project timelines, and fewer surprises. From the beginning, our construction professionals are involved in the planning stages, allowing for more accurate estimates and practical, buildable solutions from the start.
This method enhances communication and allows changes to be implemented efficiently. When you need to make an adjustment or ask a question, there is one responsive team that knows your project inside and out.

INITIAL CONSULTATION
During our initial phone call, we discuss the remodeling project you want to do. We answer the questions you have about our process, construction, project management. Then we ask several questions, to get to know a little about you, your home and what you envision for your remodel.
Next, we schedule a no-obligation in-home consultation. During this consultation we:
- Explore your space
- Define the initial Scope of Work
- Learn more about your lifestyle and preferences
- Answer the design questions you have
- Discuss comparable budget ranges from similar projects
If you find we are a good fit: personality, design concept, and estimated budget, we begin our design and pre-construction phase.
DESIGN PHASE
The Design Phase will take our preliminary concepts and budget to the finished design and fixed budget with all selections made. We work hand-in-hand to collaborate with you on all details of the design to include:
- Floor plan options
- Appliance Selection
- Cabinet styles and color choices
- Countertop material and slab selection

Our goal is to create a kitchen, bathroom, or addition that you will be proud of and your family and friends will enjoy. At Design Phase completion the plan is in place: every product is specified, each trade partner is on board, the drawings are ready and the budget is set and approved by you. Time to execute the plan.
BUILD PHASE
The Plan, our specification documents that itemize all product selections, the scope of the remodel work to complete, drawings of the particulars and budget amounts become part of the Construction Contract. These documents encompass “The Plan” and serve as the guide for our Production team. They work together with the Designer during the Design Phase to ensure that all construction requirements are met.
Throughout the Build Phase, our Project Manager is there to execute the details of the plan. The Project Manager is your day-to-day hands-on leader of your remodel and point of contact.
