NARI OF GREATER PHOENIX CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER

This boxed-in kitchen is an award-winning redesign made for entertaining! The dream of raising the ceiling and opening this boxed-in kitchen had been our client’s goal since she moved in. Now in the position to take on the adventure, she enlisted our assistance to make her dream a reality.

Our Client’s Dream List

  • Raise the ceiling in the kitchen, hall, and adjoining sitting area
  • Open the walls of the kitchen to the living room and adjoining sitting area
  • New dark cabinets to complement her furniture
  • Solid surface counters with a consistent pattern and complementary glass backsplash
  • Glass and stainless steel free-hung vent hood for the new cooktop
  • New skylights in the dining room
  • Keep existing tile floors

The Plan

First, our project designer created architectural drawings to include a 96-inch ceiling height.  Then, she showed the homeowner a couple of different space plans. Next, they chose a plan to best maximize storage and open the space.  Subsequently, the plan opened up the two outside walls of the kitchen from counter height up to the new ceiling.  Lastly, full-height, 6-inch posts were integrated at the corners of the existing kitchen.  These maintained support for the vaulted ceiling and tiled roof.  Because the kitchen’s existing layout had a great working triangle, the layout did not change.

Pulling It All Together

Next, our project designer and client selected finishes that complemented the existing color palette. The homeowner kept her newer appliances. However, she replaced her cooktop.  Subsequently, she purchased a new peninsula-style glass hood.  After that, to create a perfect balance with the surrounding rooms and their finishes,  we stained the maple cabinets espresso.  Similarly, we installed multi-colored glass mosaic backsplash and light-toned and consistently patterned quartz counters.

During the design phase, our project designer created a new electrical plan. The new electrical plan included more task-oriented decorative and ambient lighting elements. We installed plug strips under the wall cabinets.  This kept the outlets out of the glass backsplash.  And thus, we placed small appliances in their own permanent space.

Lighting

Then we installed three pendant lights at the peninsula overhang to balance the newly open space. Likewise, we repeated a similar fixture style above the dining table. Also, we added small can lights at the kitchen sink for ambient and task lighting. In addition, we installed a dimmable switch.  This gave the homeowner different lighting and mood options.  We installed larger can lights on the kitchen’s four corners.  The plan included installing larger can lights in the walkway behind the peninsula overhang. The reflective qualities of the mirrors and the replacement of the skylights achieved the client’s wish for well-lit spaces during the day and night.

In short, every item in this remodel exudes our happy homeowner’s personality. We are excited that with all the construction challenges this project presented, everything turned out great. Her new, award-winning, kitchen is all that she dreamed of and more.
